One aspect of Apple’s iOS6 which has gained significant praise is the development of the panorama camera feature.
Panorama capture in iOS6 acts like a virtual wide-angle lens allowing users the ability to produce horizontal and vertical panoramas. While similar functionality has been available from third party applications, Apple’s built in solution has gained acclaim for the ease, quality and innovation it has brought to customers in this area.
Reality Mine analysed usage patterns between iOS5 and iOS6 to see if there was a change in behaviour for camera use between the versions of Operating System. We found that there was an 80% increase in the average time of a single use of the camera app between iOS5 and iOS6. People are using the app for longer, which could be down to panoramic pictures requiring more time to take, or users experimenting with the new features. Either way, the data indicates that the new functionality is being used, highlighted by the fact that we are already seeing a 9% increase in the average overall camera use for a user – a staggering statistic given that iOS6 is in its relative infancy.
It makes sense that Apple’s new Thanksgiving TV advertisement is based on the Photo Stream functionality of iOS6. It looks like camera enhancements and photo sharing are going to be a focus point of Apple’s marketing strategy.
